History

Established in 1984, Mitchell Eye Centre continues to be one of the most advanced eye care practices in Calgary. Opening its first operating room in 1990 and laser centre in 1993, Mitchell Eye Centre consistently uses only the most advanced and innovative technology available for the treatment of eye conditions and diseases. Our new location inside the Southern Alberta Eye Centre is the most sophisticated facility in the province and among the best in Western Canada.

Mitchell Eye Centre is located inside the Southern Alberta Eye Center, co-founded by Dr. Robert Mitchell.

Facility and Location

Constructed in 2010, the Southern Alberta Eye Center is three stories over 45,000 ft². The facility was created with the goal of being the first dedicated, state-of-the-art eye clinic in Southern Alberta. Today it houses 17 eye surgeons and most disciplines related to ophthalmology, including general ophthalmology, dry eye treatment, refractive, glaucoma, retina group, plastics/orbit, pediatric, strabismus, oncology, uveitis clinic, ophthalmic surgery (local and general anesthetic), teaching, and research.

Mitchell Eye Centre is equipped with advanced technologies for treating eye conditions and diseases, including:

  • Retinal lasers
  • YAG laser suites
  • Excimer laser suite, approved by the College of physicians and Surgeons of Alberta for refractive laser eye surgery
  • Diagnostic suite for performing fluorescein angiographies, B-scans, visual fields, corneal topography, Wavefront analysis, A-scan biometry, confocal microscopic corneal analysis, ocular coherence tomography (OCT), and LipiView and LipiFlow for the assessment and treatment of chronic dry eyes.
  • Tech rooms for testing, analysis, eye exams, and health evaluations
  • Procedure rooms for small procedures

Mitchell Eye Centre can accommodate many patients at any given time and we complete more than 100 eye examinations daily. We have a highly experienced team that will take care of you and your family.

To offer our patients the most comprehensive eye care experience, we are adjacent to 20/20 Pharmacy that specializes in prescriptions related to eye care.

For patients awaiting surgery, or family and friends accompanying a Mitchell Eye Centre patient, there is a Waves coffee shop with free Wi-Fi across the hall.

Our facility is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to assist our doctors perform a wide range of procedures.

Equipment

Our testing and surgical suites are equipped with the most sophisticated surgical equipment for the treatment of eye conditions and diseases.

For performing advanced laser eye surgeries, Mitchell Eye Centre uses a ALCON Wavelight Excimer laser – one of the most advanced Excimer lasers currently available.

For quick and painless digital imaging of the interior of the eye, Mitchell Eye Centre uses the Optos 200Dx Ultra-Widefield Retinal Imaging System. For your ophthalmologist, the Optos 200Dx provides the highest quality of images in order to most effectively diagnose and treat retinal conditions and diseases. The digital images captured by the Optos 200Dx are completed in under a second and provide exceptional images of the retina quickly and painlessly.

For those driving, we’re conveniently located 3 blocks East of McLeod trail and have abundant paid parking available.

For those taking public transport, Mitchell Eye Centre is 15 to 20 minutes walking distance from the Chinook Centre C-Train and bus station.
